El izquierdista Mauricio Funes, del Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN), ha jurado como nuevo presidente de El Salvador para los próximos cinco años, tras cuatro lustros de gobierno de la derechista Alianza Republicana Nacionalista (ARENA). El nuevo dirigente ha anunciado el “inmediato” restablecimiento de las relaciones diplomáticas de su país con Cuba, rotas desde 1959, durante su discurso de investidura presidencial.

Um relatório divulgado nesta segunda-feira pela ONG ambientalista Greenpeace acusa o governo brasileiro de financiar indiretamente a destruição da Amazônia por meio de recursos destinados à criação de gado em áreas desmatadas ilegalmente.

The latest attack on Belarus was perpetrated by the Russian Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin, who offered a rather gloomy forecast for the Belorussian economy in late May. Kudrin noted that Belarus had spent a third of its international reserves in the first quarter of 2009 to keep the national currency afloat, and that at this pace the country would soon lose all of its accumulated foreign currency and find itself insolvent. Predictably enough, Alexander Lukashenko was furious upon hearing this. He went as far as to say that Kudrin was acting along with “yapping crackpots funded by Western money.” (more…)

Only 8 Russian strategic submarines are combat-ready – analyst

Russia’s navy has 12 nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines in service, but only eight of them are combat-capable, a Russian military analyst said on Monday.

“Out of 12 vessels, Northern Fleet’s Typhoon class Dmitry Donskoi submarine has been overhauled to test new Bulava sea-based ballistic missiles, six Delta-IV class units are being refitted with modernized version of the R-29RM (SS-N-23) missile, known as Sineva, and five Delta-III class submarines are deployed with the Pacific Fleet” said Mikhail Barabanov, editor-in-chief of the Moscow Defense Brief magazine.
